Committee Meeting Held 8-15-09

The August 15, 2009 meeting will be considered the Foundation's First Annual Convention.

Debbie met with Erica Upshaw, who started a Foundation with her mother after losing her brother Joe Upshaw to alcohol and drug poisoning.  Visit http://www.keepfriendshipalive.com/    The purpose of the meeting was to explore joining forces and including other educational foundations to create a national foundation.  All so far think this is the way to go, to work together, to pool resources.

The Foundation retained Ashley Richardson, a professional advocate, to approach corporate sponsors about alcohol poisoning education.  Ashley has been retained for an initial one year project.

Non-Profit status paperwork has been submitted to the CPA firm that is filing for the Foundation's tax exempt status.

Ed White at Everyday Fitness and Training has offered his gym for meetings and presentations.

The need for a "Marketing Package" was discussed that could be mailed to school districts to solicit interest in having Debbie attend school functions.  Steve offered to work up a draft.

The Shasta County Social Host Ordinance was discussed.

The Foundation will staff a booth on September 7 at the Labor Day picnic at Anderson River Park.

A possible Art Contest to depict alcohol poisoning was discussed with the thought of presenting it through local schools with a scholarship.  Perhaps it goes nationwide.

A walkathon for December 20th was discussed.

A "student" golf tournament, perhaps of local high school teams, was discussed

The current effort at college campuses and state legislatures to "decriminalize" calling for help was discussed.  Finding a legislator to sponsor a bill is on our future task list.

A street team to be present during the next Comic Con (comic convention) was discussed.  The team could hand out wrist bands, etc.

The need to approach Sober Grad early this school year was discussed.  It would be great to be able to place a wrist band in each students package.

The next TV Commercial production was viewed and discussed.

ICE (In Case of Emergency) cell phone programming was discussed.

Promotional materials were discussed.  The most popular items seem to be hooded sweatshirts, wrist bands and lanyards.  Steve will price lanyards and coordinate an order for the 2009 school year.  Chris will work on special orders that have been coming in.

Audrey will follow up on the Shasta Youth Leadership Camp and the NEED Camp.

Their was a discussion on approaching the local faith community, particular in order to see if our message can be incorporated into their youth camps.

There was a discussion on copyright and trademark issues pertaining to the Foundation logo and slogans.  Steve will follow up on this.

There was open discussion on how to get the message out to the target audience of young people as a priority, parents, too.  Consensus was that there would need to be a different message to the young people than the message to parents.  Different audience, different message and means of conveying the message.  Bifurcate the message.

Parents:  education, lock up alcohol, no "safe" houses to drink or "cool" parents.

Youths:   Peer-to-peer message, pledge idea to call for help, media, video, short messages, needs to be by youth or with youth, interviews regarding the effect Shelby's death has on her friends.

 Web site ideas were discussed.

Consensus was to invite an Emergency Room doctor to educate the committee members regarding.
